One family, making a difference

” I was heartbroken,” she said this week, alluding to a trip to Walkerswood, where she says children are hungry for both food and education. “Upon returning to the U.S., I made a solemn oath that I will use every resource and means I can think of to provide help and some relief to this school and community.” The elementary school she speaks of already does its part to see that children are fed with a farm project that grows fruits and vegetables, said Ms. Gomes, a Twin Rivers resident who works in marketing and public affairs at the University Medical Center at Princeton. But more help is needed, and Mrs. Gomes has formed the Walkerswood Relief Project. “Even with the project, some kids still go hungry without a nutritious breakfast and lunch,” she said. “Our dream is that each and every student will not be hungry during school.”Ms. Gomes is a member of the Rutty family, one which avoided the depths of poverty and despair that long has symbolized life for many of the people on the Caribbean island nation of more than 2.6 million. The family, which owns Trans Caribe Express Shippers Inc. of East Orange, N.J. was able to collect enough donations from families and friends in the United States to send in 2005 a 900-cubic-foot container of school and office supplies to Walkerswood, a village of about 4,000 tucked away in the lush tropical hills of St. Ann Parish.  Read more...

Volunteer or Donate!

A priority need for these programs, which operates summer and after-school programs, is funding for curriculum supplies and part-time program staff. In the past, we have relied on volunteers.  This has resulted in limited resources and continuity for the participants whose success depends on positive role models and the relationships they build with their instructors.  WYF is requesting your donation to support programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of these underprivileged youth. A contribution from your organization will give us the jumpstart we need while we continue to implement our fundraising plan.  Read on...

Upcoming Projects

Greetings One and all!   It’s a beautiful day here in Jamaica, hope everyone is in great spirits.  I am now putting together an update on the past pageant along with the updates that took place since the pageant as well as things that I  would like to put in place to all the sponsors.  I know this is important because everyone wants to know whats going on.  I have one suggestion.   I am now working with the girls and they are writing their thank you letters. They are excited as this is important to them because the sponsors played a great role in their lives.  I was hoping to put a package together tp package with the DVD officially labeled, along with the girls thank you letter to whom ever sponsored a child for the last Rutty Roots crowning of the First Annual Jamaica’s Princess.  We thank all sponsors who made this event a great success.  Most of the sponsors I know are just a hand reach away and a few are maybe 2-3 day mailing so it wont cost us much for mailing when he bring the packages up.  Let me know what you think.   Read on> ~ Addis Alem Getfield-Rutty Founder, A Rutty Roots Youth...
